One might think of what's in a name or surname but when it comes to 'Pandharipande' one has to think from all the ways it to be pronounced,written or make it easier to let people know.
From what I have known of this surname, 'Pandhari' taken from Pandharpur city and then 'Pande' as in Pandey from Madhya Pradesh (MP). Mostly found in Vidarbh region (Maharashtra) near MP. Generally a marathi surname will be having 'kar' in it like Palekar, Jawlekar or 'nis' as in Fadnis or Chitnis. But my surname is quite confusing.
Since childhood it has been very difficult to learn our own surname and write it down on front page of each notebook. Each time when I write it I only wait for the last letter 'e' in ppande(see it comes naturally we need to short it down). These 13 char string troubled a lot in the life till now. In exams when it's time to look at the question paper, one will try to keep adjusting this surname in the boxes, if by mistake pande goes in the other row, you may carry two surnames or a middle name as 'Pandhari'. In addition to the general instructions for the exams parents will tell you 'surname thik se likhna beta'. Now what, it is sometimes too much to think rather than about a exam. Question comes naturally why my surname is like this?
No one can help it, once it is you in 'Khandan' you have to carry it along with you. Somedays back I joined Pandharipande Kullotpanna community on Orkut, and I realised it is hard to find out our known roots (Vanshavruksha) but wherever they are, must be trying to convince themselves by taking examples of other long surnames probably south Indians as they carry a bit longer one.
Like it requires a great care to get printed 'your' degree properly, you need to convince your friends to make them use your first name.But friends are generally used to call by surname,and if they are not short enough it can be anything. What are the options do you think about my surname?

Maths looks very closely associated with this surname, as in someone suggested a Pandharipande's principal for the surname to be reminded for , now it is PPP, wah !! wah !! This surname is going to be famous someday :)
& it is to be reminded you after years by a schoolfriend, hey pandre how are you? and pandre will react 'what' (oh it's me), ya abs fine?
Imagine you have to raise a complaint and you are talking to some helpdesk person, where do you start with? Ofcourse firstname and surname, you have to be patient otherwise I have ended up saying 'p' for 'pandharipande'. C'mon don't laugh now.......
We expect altleast marathi people saying it correctly but in Pune too it becomes Pandharinath, 'are kay hey, we are not maharaj'. How can we then expect an english person to get it so easily, he will try & try like pan pan pan.... he quits.
Well, it's not that difficult and specifically when you are used to.
